L'ultimo Gattopardo. Ritratto di Goffredo Lombardo

Giuseppe Tornatore

Italy, 2010, 98'

Synopsis

L'ultimo Gattopardo is not only an exciting documentary about Goffredo Lombardo, the producer who completely redesigned Italian cinema in the second half of the 20th century with Titanus, helping to make it impressive in the world. It is also a hymn to the beauty, wealth, strength, the determination of cinema, of the men who made it and of all those who loved and continue to love it. Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore made his debut with The Professor thanks to Goffredo Lombardo, and has dedicated some of his best films to the splendid dream of cinema. Together with the maestro Ennio Morricone, brilliant creator of the film’s soundtrack, he was the ideal figure to direct this portrait in images. The interviewees discuss the immediate postwar period in which Titanus, founded in 1904 by his father Gustavo Lombardo, followed a very popular film production line, up to the seasons in which, driven by an urge to shift towards more challenging cinema, Goffredo not only found himself following in the footsteps of auteur cinema but even supporting it, encouraging its existence up to the great, truly singular adventure of his most beloved film, Luchino Visconti's The Leopard.
