Basilico. L’infinito è là in fondo
Stefano Santamato
Italy, 2023, 62'
Synopsis
The documentary traces the key stages of his career: from the first reportage photographs taken in his youth during his years of political activism, to the iconic “Milan. Portraits of Factories” of the late 1970s, right up to his final works in the major metropolises of the 2000s.
Outlining the professional and personal profile of Gabriele Basilico are leading figures from the world of culture, people who were close to him and who cherish anecdotes, reflections and obsessions about him. Among them are his friends and colleagues Gianni Berengo Gardin, Oliviero Toscani and Toni Thorimbert, photography historian Roberta Valtorta and director Amos Gitai. Photo editor Giovanna Calvenzi – Gabriele Basilico’s one and only, irreplaceable life partner – takes on the role of narrator, guiding the viewer back in time to when it all began.
The film also feels the need to question the present by offering an intimate comparison between the contemporary city and the perspective of five young photographers invited by Toni Thorimbert to engage with Gabriele Basilico’s legacy.
